A BLONDE YOUNG BOY
Victor Christiaan de Kock, circa 1955, aged 10.

BIRTH DATE: 8 MAY 1945

Named Victor for Victory in honour of the Allies winning WWII.

Vic was born on 8 May 1945, known around the world as VE or Victory Day signalling the end of the Second World War. His second name Christiaan was after the famous Jan Christiaan Smuts, a distant relative.

He was the only child of Josias and Martie de Kock and grew up in the south of Johannesburg attending first Forest Hill Primary School and then Forest High where he excelled at swimming and rugby and had mediocre academics. He developed his thirst for knowledge and the world around him later in life, not at school.

The compulsory stint in the army followed and he regaled us for years with stories about “kom hier troopie en hardloop!!!!!!!”

He had some neighbours and friends called Kenny and Lenny and they got up to a lot of mischief as young “jollers” and after one particular party he never drank gin again for the rest of his life.
